Associate Professor of East Asian Languages & Literatures (Chinese)

I study how learners of Chinese build — and sustain — the motivation to keep going, and I design teaching that turns classroom study into a lifelong, self-directed practice.

About

I am an Associate Professor of Chinese at Hamilton College, where I have taught since 2017 in the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures and the programs in Chinese and Asian Studies. My work sits at the meeting point of applied linguistics and language pedagogy: I research the psychology of second-language motivation and translate what I find into materials and classrooms that help students perform beyond proficiency.

My teaching and research focus on understanding sustainable foreign-language learning motivation and on creating motivating experiences in the classroom and beyond — with the goal of transforming students into lifelong, self-motivated, and effective learners.
